First Amendment Awards;
13 students pocketed
$11,000 in scholarships; OpenTheGovernment.org director Patrice McDermott said Barack Obama is better than the alternative but it’s hard to say by how much — all heady stuff at Fort Worth SPJ’s annual banquet —
but the real star was investigative journalist/ wanna-be banjo picker Jennifer Peebles, the Open Doors Award winner from TexasWatchdog.org. Quiet and unassuming yet wry with Seinfeldian timing, she needed only five minutes of closing remarks to make you want to go call an elected official and ask a follow-up question. An unforgettable end to a memorable
evening — April 17, 2009.
