TCU 360 in November received the first-place Pinnacle Award from the College Media Association, the nation’s largest organization of student media advisers, for its breaking news coverage surrounding the arrests of numerous TCU students on drug charges in February. The award was announced at the CMA/Associated Collegiate Press convention in Chicago. Emily Atteberry, a former managing editor for TCU’s Image magazine, was a national finalist, fourth place, in the ACP Design of the Year contest. For ACP Story of the Year, Ryan Osborne received honorable mention in the magazine diversity category. In SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards judging, current Image photo editor Daniel Ethridge finished in the top three nationally this fall for photo illustration. ...

The Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association honored Star-Telegram columnist Dave Lieber with its 2012 Lanny Priddy Award for Courageous Pursuit of Justice. “Between trial lawyers, prosecutors and newspaper people, we’re the last line of defense in a world that’s troubled and needs help. There aren’t many of us left, you know? I think that Americans have a basic need. They need to know that someone is fighting for them,” Lieber said in his acceptance remarks. “After 37 years of daily newspaper work, I still get jazzed up to do this because I remind myself all the time why I started in the first place, what my goals were. Every day there are too many people counting on us.” ...

TCU will partner with the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers to offer the Certified Public Communicator program. The 95-hour curriculum, developed by strategic communication professors Jacqueline Lambiase and Laura Bright, is designed for PIOs and others working for cities, counties and school districts. Participants will stay on campus for a week this summer and next and develop three-year communication plans working with PR, advertising and marketing experts. The 2013 dates are July 28-Aug. 2. Former Fort Worth SPJ president and Arlington Star-Telegram publisher O.K. Carter’s first book, “Caddos, Cotton and Cowboys: Essays on Arlington,” hit profit status within two weeks of its release, and a second printing is coming. Former Arlington Mayor Richard Greene, who often crossed swords with Carter, said in a review: “O.K.’s easy reading style, that made him my first stop for three decades through the daily Arlington paper (when there was one), will delight, inform and inspire you.”
