Pressing Matters: As Times Change, Printers Adapt

We used to spell printing i-n-k-o-n-p-a-p-e-r. Now the word contains w-e-b, r-o-i and a lot of other letters that altogether spell one big concept:
C-H-A-N-G-E.

Marketers today face new challenges, including message speed-to-market, tracking return on investment, and integrating print projects into (and beyond) the web, notably through social media. Printing has responded by becoming more nimble, more responsive, more relevant and more accountable. Printers have evolved into valuable partners in every phase of the process.

At the March meeting, print industry gurus Ryan Crist and John Cockrell Jr. of Cockrell Enovation will look at the innovations that have helped the industry adapt to a shifting landscape. The four-part program starts with how to select the right press and printer for a project, then segues into identifying the right targets and mining the data to ensure maximum return. Part three is a whirlwind tour of the world of W2P (web to print). The program concludes with unraveling the mystery of the PURLs.

As the manager of print innovation at Cockrell Enovation, Crist tackles solution development, market expansion and marketing. For the past decade, he has focused on print on-demand and marketing automation solutions for digital, offset and large format applications. Company VP Cockrell focuses on digital printing and the ability to develop solutions that streamline marketing efforts and leverage web-to-print platforms.

Place: City Club, 301 Commerce St.

How Fort Worth ‘Supersized’ Its Super Bowl Experience

Join GFW PRSA in March for a behind-the-scenes perspective from three communicators who helped maximize the Fort Worth spotlight during the national football event of the year.

Kelly Campbell, vice president of marketing communications for the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau; Jason Lamers, city of Fort Worth media and public affairs manager; and Tracy Gilmour, Sundance Square director of marketing, will give a play-by-play timeline of events leading up to Super Bowl XLV, including extensive planning efforts, crisis plan preparation and most memorable moments.

Campbell joined the Fort Worth CVB in October 2006 as director of marketing communications and in January 2008 was named vice president of marketing communications. A TCU journalism grad, she was named one of the “Forty Under Forty” by the Fort Worth Business Press in 2008.

Lamers is a communication strategist and former reporter with expertise in crisis communication and issues management, including broadcast, digital and print media. While public information officer for the Fort Worth Public Health Department, he was heavily involved in the local response to the anthrax attacks after Sept. 11, 2001. Now as lead spokesman for the city, he is responsible for its crisis communication activities.

As Sundance Square marketing chief, Gilmour oversees public pronouncements for the heralded 35-block mixed-use downtown entertainment district, recognized internationally for its restored historic buildings, diverse culinary fare, snappy arts venues and for having no unusable temporary seats. Gilmour’s team was recently honored with the Texas Downtown Association’s Judges Recognition Award Standard of Excellence.
