STRAIGHT STUFF

Next to a great idea, voice is what appeals most to editors and readers. Author-educator Michelle Stimpson will sing like a bird on the topic at the next Writers’ Guild of Texas meeting, 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, at the Richardson Public Library. Stimpson’s works include the acclaimed “Boaz Brown,” “Divas of Damascus Road” and “Falling Into Grace.” She has published several short stories for high school students through her educational publishing company, Right Track Academic Support Services, and is pursuing her ministerial certification. She ministers to women through her online newsletter.  •  Third-Monday early-birds: Aug. 20, attorney Andrea Perez on copyright, intellectual property and TALA (Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts); Sept. 17, Dave Lieber (“Yankee Cowboy”), storytelling for promotion; Oct. 15, Joe Milazzo, getting the most from the sound of your writing; Nov. 19, small business owner Nicci O’Boyle on e-mail marketing and social media.

IABC local update: IABC Dallas board member Amy George, the marketing and communication VP for Cooper Aerobics, will discuss the five-stage behavior change model to gauge a person’s readiness to make health a habit — and apply the model to organizational change — at an IABC Dallas members-only breakfast Tuesday, July 17. Invitations will be sent to members. Care to join? More here.

PRSA local update: Dr. Shelley Wigley, a PRSA member and UTA communication assistant professor, is conducting a study of PR professionals’ use of social media. Participants have the chance to win one of 20 Starbucks gift cards. Find the survey here. Direct questions to shelley.wigley@uta.edu.

PRSA local update II: This month in PR/marketing history. July 9, 2006: The world’s largest parade of Fiats took place in Italy, featuring 500 Fiat 500s. On a related note, Fiat’s first car, in 1899, was known as Il Topolino (“little mouse” in Italian, possibly influenced by Mickey Mouse).  •  July 5, 1946: French designer Louis Reard unveiled a daring two-piece swimsuit in Paris. He called it a “bikini,” having been inspired by the U.S. atomic test that took place off an island of the same name earlier that week.

PRSA local update III: Standing reminders. The DFW Communicators Job Bank lists full-time, part-time and internship positions in PR, media affairs, advertising/sales, event planning, graphic design, marketing, and corporate and employee communications throughout North Texas. Employers who are members of the participating organizations may post a job listing for $75; the cost for nonmembers is $100, for nonprofits $50. Each posting runs a month. Greater Fort Worth PRSA receives a portion of the proceeds when a member marks his or her membership status on the submission form. More from Jerrod Resweber, Greater Fort Worth PRSA job bank chair, at jresweber@webershandwick.com or 469-375-0216. ... Stay on top of emerging trends and industry news, extend your network while increasing your knowledge, and keep learning and stay competitive. Any practitioner with at least two years in the field is eligible for membership in the world’s leading organization for PR professionals. Those with fewer than two years experience or who recently graduated from college and were active in PRSSA may join as an associate member.
