Retired UTA j-prof Phil Vinson has a new book out, “Fort Worth: A Personal View,” a collection of photographs shot over the past 40-plus years. Released by TCU Press in September, “A Personal View” offers a close-up look at the scenes that almost slip past, the overlooked and out of the way, in Fort Worth and throughout North Texas. More than 100 photographs, both color and black and white, await.

SPJ national update II: When Dan Rather filed suit against CBS 15 months ago — claiming that his former employer had commissioned a politically biased investigation into a “60 Minutes” segment about President Bush’s National Guard service — the network derided the case as “old news.” Now, using the subpoena and the threat of punishment for lying under oath, Rather has unearthed evidence that seems to support his assertions. More here. ... A federal shield law will not get a vote in the lame duck session of Congress, says Kathy Kirby, partner at Wiley Rein and counsel to the Radio-Television News Directors Association. But she says she has assurances it will be reintroduced early in the next session. More here.

SPJ national update III: The Associated Press’ largest union claims that more than 500 AP employees have signed a petition urging the company to reverse course in contract talks and saying that the company’s bargaining stance “threatens quality journalism.” The News Media Guild says the petition signers asked the AP to change direction, finding the AP’s contract proposals to the News Media Guild to be “regressive.” More here. ... It’s a long way from $700 billion, but the media start-up Six Apart is introducing its own economic rescue. The TypePad Journalist Bailout Program will offer 20-30 recently terminated bloggers and journalists a free pro account on the company’s blogging platform, placement on the company’s blog aggregation site, Blogs.com, and enrollment in the company’s advertising revenue-sharing program. SPJ national update IV: Ireland has dramatically increased its newspaper recycling, according to figures audited by international environmental consultants RPS. The figures show 73.8 per cent of all Irish newsprint was recycled last year — up about 45 per cent in five years. More here. ... The steep decline in newspaper print advertising keeps getting steeper, and, for the first time, even online ad sales have dropped. U.S. print ads were down 16 percent in the second quarter to $8.8 billion. That makes nine consecutive quarters in which print revenues have declined, notes Alan Mutter at Reflections of a Newsosaur. TCU Image editor (2007-08) Ky Lewis won first place in magazine feature spreads in the 16th annual Best of Collegiate Design published by College Media Advisers. Lewis, a spring 2008 graduate, also won fourth place in the informational graphic category for all publications at the 2008 CMA/Associated Collegiate Press convention in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 30-Nov. 2. Current Image design chief Ronald Villegas, last year’s photography editor, won third place in the ACP’s environmental portrait category. Image was a national finalist or first-place winner the past three years in SPJ’s Mark of Excellence Awards. ...

Fort Worth-based Concussion is named one of the world’s best design firms in the inaugural edition of WOLDA, the Worldwide Logo Design Annual. The firm’s logo for Quicksilver Gas Services, created by Charlie Howlett, was selected from 1,100 entries from around the world. Only 192 of the logos (174 designed by professionals, 18 by students) will appear in the ’08 WOLDA. In other news at Concussion, it has been chosen the agency of record for the Route 66 Casino Hotel and the Shooting Star Casino Hotel & Event Center. The former is an enterprise of the Pueblo of Laguna in Albuquerque, N.M., the latter of the White Earth Nation in Mahnomen, Minn. ...

The Hondo Group is expanding its interactive marketing by augmenting traditional Web 2.0 online activity with new interactive tools including web site hosting, online PR, blogging, podcasting, video optimization and mobile media. Still at Hondo, the agency announced that it has developed one of the first quantitative assessment tools for evaluating environmentally sound business practices. Account supervisor Shana Barkley will oversee green marketing initiatives while consultant Shena Turlington will begin implementing eco-friendly business sustainability practices.
