One Super, Short-notice Freelancing Seminar

Are you up Freelance Creek sans paddle? Come to SPJ’s free seminar Saturday, June 6, at UTA and leave with, if not a paddle, at least some fresh ideas on finding clients and negotiating with them, creating a web site and handling taxes and 401(k)s.

Panels will address getting out in the market, dealing with the business side, and visual and multimedia freelancing. The seminar is open to media professionals. The panelists include:

Carol Zuber-Mallison, who, after stints at The Dallas Morning News and Star-Telegram, has had a successful freelance graphics business for 17 years

Manuel Pecina with the American Society of Media Photographers

Paul Foutch, former Dallas Morning News stock market editor and business reporter, now with Edward Jones Investments

• Freelance “rancontrepreneur” Trey Garrison, a frequent contributor to D Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, Reason magazine, Dallas Business Journal and other publications

Catherine Team, creator of NeedMedia.com and an advertising and marketing pro for 30 years

Meda Kessler, editorial director of 360 West magazine

The seminar will run 9 a.m.-1 p.m., with most of the action in room 258, Fine Arts Building (Central Section). The Fine Arts Building is on the west side of Cooper Street, between UTA Boulevard and Greek Row Drive. Park in lots on the north side of the building and across Nedderman Drive to the west. Once you're parked, signs will direct you to the room. Directions to UTA from I-30: uta.edu/maps/directions-i30. And a map: maps.google.com/maps?q=700+Greek+Row+Dr.+Arlington,+Texas&hl=en
